Explore the complex cultural and ecological landscape stories of SṈIDÈ»EȽ. This site was a wintering village for the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples for thousands of years. The narrative of its colonization, industrialization, environmental destruction and subsequent First Nations cultural revitalization, and community activated, land and water-based restoration will be the focus of this outdoor class. We’ll walk the land and converse with local knowledge keepers, Elders, activists, learners and educators.
Nikki Wright, a community organizer since the 1970’s, is an Environmental Educator, Conservationist, and the Executive Director of SeaChange Marine Conservation Society.
Maleea Acker is an environmental journalist, author, and instructor at the University of Victoria in the Departments of Geography and Canadian Studies.
Ken Josephson is a Cartographer and community project liaison in UVic’s Geography Department. Both are experienced facilitators of workshops and classes, using collaborative, innovative, community-engaged, in-person, and online methods.
